Cora Schimmel

Cora Van Roekel Schimmel, daughter of Henry and Maggie Verwers Van Roekel, was born December 5, 1904, on a farm near Olivet.

On February 8, 1934, Cora married Cornelius Schimmel at the home of her parents in a double wedding ceremony with her sister. After their marriage, Cora and Cornelius lived on a farm west of Tracy where they raised crops and chickens, milked cows, and gardened. To this union five children were born: Jean, Henry, David, Dody, and Willa.

In 1954 they purchased and moved to a farm northeast of Pella. In 1971 they purchased and moved to a home in Pella. By this time Cornelius' had lost almost all of his eyesight from glaucoma, distinguishing only light from dark. He lived in Pella for five years before his death in 1976. Following his death, Cora remained in their home four years and then moved to Fair Haven East in February 1980 where she resided for twenty-one years. She became a Long-Term Care resident in February 2001.

Cora was a member of Covenant Reformed Church in Pella and also the Ladies Aid.

Quilts, quilts, and more quilts! A big part of Cora's retirement years were spent making quilts. Those who have benefited from them are her family, victims of the flood in Des Moines, and many poor people in Mississippi and Appalachia. She never kept count of how many quilts she made but the number would be astounding. Her hands were never idle. She also crocheted many afghans and pillows for her family members.

She is survived by her five children: Jean Costache of Pella, Henry and Wilma Schimmel of Pella, David and Zelda Schimmel of Pella, Dody and Leland Braun of Prairie City, Willa and Gerrit Branderhorst of Pella; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers: William, Cornelis, who died in infancy, Grover, Cornelis, Clarence Van Roekel; three sisters: Minnie Vis, Lena Gray, and Carrie Van Wyk.
