Sunday Garden Chapel Funeral Home Pella, Iowa MEMORIALS ( In Lieu of Flowers ) Hospice of Pella Fred Dykens Fred Dykens, son of Nick and Jennie De Kock Dykens, was born March 25, 1912, on a farm north of Killduff, Iowa. He passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center - Long Term Care on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at the age of ninety-three years. At the age of five Fred began his education at the Ludwick School, south of Lynnville. Later he attended Sandridge School, north of Pella, where he graduated from the eighth grade. He attended Pella High School, graduating with the class of 1929. He then attended Central College in Pella, graduating in 1933. On August 22, 1946, Fred was united in marriage with Elizabeth Aalbers at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Following their marriage the couple farmed in the Sandridge area north of Pella and raised their two children: Harold Wayne and Ellouise Ilean. In 1972 they retired and moved to Pella where Fred worked at Jaarsma Bakery for eight years and also drove a school bus for Pella Christian Schools. Fred and Elizabeth enjoyed traveling in their motor home to various scenic spots in the United States. For many years Fred lovingly cared for his wife as her health declined. Elizabeth passed away April 22, 1986. He resided at his home in Pella until November 2003 when he moved to the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center. He was a member of the Third Reformed Church where he attended faithfully as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his two children and their spouses: Harold and Lyn Grooters Dykens of Altoona, and Ellouise and Gene Meinders of Leighton; five grandchildren: Nathaniel Dykens, Allison Dykens, Erin and Richardo Cruz, Jennifer and Terry Thorington, and Mark Meinders; one great-grandson: Isaac Thorington. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his sister, Gertrude (Elmer) Slykhuis. The memories Fred created in his lifetime will always be cherished by his family and friends. |
