Henry Hoogendoorn

Henry Hoogendoorn, son of Cornelis and Anna (Brouwer) Hoogendoorn, was born in Vinkeveen, Utrecht, the Netherlands on March 19, 1914.

Henry served as a private in the Dutch Army and joined the Dutch underground during the German occupation of the Netherlands. On May 29, 1941, Henry was united in marriage to Tena De Haan. He farmed with his father and during this time, five children were born. At age 33, Henry and family immigrated to the United States.

They established their first home in Eddyville, Iowa, where he continued farming with his brother-in-law. A year later they moved to Williamsburg, where two more children were born. In 1952, the family rented a farm near Peoria. In 1959, they rented a farm near Pella and three years later, they were able to purchase a farm north of Pella, where they lived until retiring to Pella in 1978.

Henry was a charter member of the Faith Christian Reformed Church and was a longtime member of the Men's Society at Faith. He enjoyed gardening, reading and especially enjoyed his family. During his retirement, he worked with the Pella Historical Society planting and taking care of the flowers.

Henry is survived by his wife, Tena of Pella; his children, Anne and Marv Kaluf of De Motte, Indiana; Case and Pat Hoogendoorn of Oak Park, Illinois; Tena and Wayne Vos of Prospect, Oregon; Nancy and George De Vries of Palm Desert, California; Sandi and Ken Vos of Johnson City, Texas; Mary and Art Hoekstra of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Helene and Ken Tukker of Pella, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; sixteen grandchildren-in-law; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Jannie Verrips, Alene de Heer, Annie (Henk) Sloeserwy and Corrie Voshart, all of the Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
