MEMORIALS

Sully, Iowa

On January 1, 1907 Jennie Vonk Hoksbergen was the second child and first daughter born to Cornelius and Nellie Van Holland Vonk in Renswoude, Veenendaal, Holland. The family grew to eleven in the next sixteen years. When Jennie was seven years old and the number of children had grown to six, the family took a ship to America. Her father worked as a farmhand for many years on various farms in the Otley, Iowa area.

As a young girl Jennie worked at Central College as a dorm maid until she married Nick Hoksbergen on January 12, 1930. They had twin sons, one of whom was stillborn. They raised the other, Edward, while living on the farm near Taintor.

After moving to Sully in 1961 they worked as custodians at the First Reformed Church for four years until Nick died of a heart attack on October 26, 1965. After his death Jennie took a nurses aide course and worked in nursing homes in Newton and Pella until her retirement in July 1972.

In the spring of 1995 Jennie moved to the Hilltop Manor in Pella and enjoyed life there for eight years. When her health declined in 2003, she moved to the Pella Regional Health Care Center-Long Term Care where she passed away early Thursday morning, January 22, 2009 at the age of one hundred and two.

Jennie was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church in Sully. She had a lot of time for hobbies: fabric painting, tatting, crocheting, and quilting. She entered many things in the Mahaska County and Iowa State Fairs, bringing home lots of ribbons. She also enjoyed watching her four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren grow up.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her son, Edward and his wife Sylvia; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Corrie Terpstra and Evelena Vande Wege; one brother: Richard Vonk; a step-sister: Effie Robison; and many nephews and nieces.

Jennie was preceded in death by her husband, Nick; her stillborn son, Edward's twin brother; and her brothers and sisters: Case, Janet, Rena, Tunis, Minnie, Gertrude, and Nellie.

Jennie will be missed by her family and friends but will always be remembered as a kind, loving, and helpful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
