Nellie Kooistra, daughter of William and Annie (De Hoog) Van Genderen was born October 16, 1912, near New Sharon, Iowa. She grew up in the New Sharon area and attended country school near her home.

On May 10, 1932 Nellie was united in marriage with Bernard Kooistra.  To this union two children were born: Carla and Larry. Nellie and Bernard farmed for over fifty years in the Lynnville, Iowa, area. Nellie enjoyed being a homemaker and helping on the farm. Bernard passed away on September 29, 2000.

Nellie was a member of the Sully Community Church where she enjoyed working in the nursery. She especially loved babysitting her grandchildren and often many of the neighborhood children.

Nellie passed away at the age of ninety-six on May 4, 2009, at the Oskaloosa Rehab Center, Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she resided for the past year and one-half. Prior to that, Nellie was at the New Sharon Nursing Home for eight and one-half years.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her daughter and husband: Carla and Seymour Zylstra of Sully, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Joyce Kooistra of Sully, Iowa; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; her son, Larry; her parents: William and Annie Van Genderen; her parents-in-law: Weitz and Catherine Kooistra; and one great-granddaughter.

Nellie will be missed by her family and many friends.  They will always cherish the memories she made in her lifetime.
