Andrew Hiemstra was born on December 13, 1916, to Harry and Helena Van Rees Hiemstra at the family home near Otley, Iowa. He passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House the evening of October 15, 2009, at the age of ninety-two.

As a young man Andrew enjoyed spending time with his friends, which often included cruising the square in downtown Pella on Sunday night. It is there he met a very special girl, Aletta Rus. On February 16, 1939, he and Aletta were united in marriage at her parents' home. Andrew and Aletta had seven children: Ronald, Richard, Norma, Barbara, Mark, David, and Lila Joy who died in infancy.

Andrew and Aletta started farming near Otley soon after their marriage. They later moved to a farm near Monroe, then Prairie City, and in 1948 moved to a farm near Pella where they lived until 1988 when they moved to Pella.

Andrew was a faithful member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella and later became a member of the Covenant Reformed Church. He enjoyed traveling, mission work with CRWRC, doing volunteer work with Hospice and the Christian Opportunity Center, spending time with family, and loved playing pool with his friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife Aletta; his six children and their spouses; nineteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Jessie Van Vark of Pella; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; daughter Lila Joy Hiemstra; brothers: Leonard Hiemstra and Edward Hiemstra; sisters: Emma Hiemstra and Anna Both of; great-granddaughter Jenna Hiemstra; sons-in-law Larry Vander Werff and Paul Vos.
