Florence Lucille (Eckhoff) Swank was born November 1, 1922 near Platte, SD. She was the daughter of Peter G. Eckhoff and Johanna Timmermans (Eckhoof-Van Norden). She was the youngest of nine children.
At the age of two years, she moved with her parents to Hollandale, MN where she lived until the age of 15 when her father passed away. At that time she went to live with her older brother, George and family for six months. She attended high school in Platte, SD during this time. In June she came to Sully, IA to live with her mother who was caring for Mr. Wm Rozendaal and resided in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rozendaal. Florence and her mother continued to live in the Rozendaal home following his death allowing Florence to complete her last two years of high school.
In 1942, she was united in marriage to Marion P. Swank at the home of her sister, Wilma Rozendaal. They farmed in the Sully and Pella vicinities for 36 years. In 1977 they left the farm and moved to Pella and Florence worked at the Pella Community High School in the hot lunch program until she retired.
Florence's hobbies included crocheting, sewing, painting and traveling. After Florence retired she spent two years traveling with Marion in their camper to visit their children and grandchildren. They had a great deal of enjoyment spending time together and with family until Marion's death in 1984.
To this union six children were born; five of whom survive her. Phillip John preceded her in death in 2002. Those surviving her are Phillip's widow, Mary Ellen of Tyler ,TX and her two daughters, Ellen Marie of Baton Rouge and Cyndi Dieker of Atlanta, GA; Bonita and her husband Tom Hetherington of Lewisburg, PA and their children, Eric (Vonda) and Cori of Lewisburg, PA; David and his wife Carol of Chelsea, MI, their daughter Shari (Wally) Donovon of Galesburg, MI, daughter Monica of Kalamazoo, MI and son Michael (Robyn) of South Lyon, MI; Kenneth and Sue of Pella, IA, their daughter Angela Kirby of Pella and son Chad (Amy) of Knoxville, TN; Marianne and her husband Shawn O'Rourke of Virginia Beach, VA, their daughter Patricia (Josh) Downing of Virginia Beach, VA and son Michael of New York, NY; and Robert and his wife Lynn of Sandy Hook, VA, their son Levi of Charlottesville, VA and daughters Morgan and Mikala of Sandy hook, VA. She is also survived by 13 great-grand children.
Florence made her confession of faith in Jesus Christ in the Sully Reformed Church and was a member there for many years. After moving to Pella, she became a member of Trinity Reformed Church.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, son Phillip, her parents, brothers George, John, Ed and Bill, and sisters Ella, Pearl and a baby girl.
One sister, Wilma Rozendaal of Pella mourns her passing along with relatives and friends.
