Hendrika Johanna Matilda Zegers was born January 19, 1918, to Willem and Mary (Van Kolfscholten) Zegers in Woudenberg, Netherlands. She passed away on November 27, 2017, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, Iowa.
Hendrika and her family came to the United States in 1924, when she was seven years old. They made their home on the Maytag Farm in Jasper County where she attended school through the eighth grade. Hendrika later went on to earn her G.E.D.
In January 1941 she married Adrianus “Jim” Van Weelden. This union was blessed with two children: Linda and Jim. Sadly, her husband Jim passed away in 1948, just two years after returning from the Army. Hendrika then married Walter Rozendaal in 1953, and was blessed with six step-children.
Hendrika worked for the Sully telephone office from home and as waitress at the café in Sully for several years. To provide for her family, she took in boarders for $5 a day. She was a talented seamstress and made clothes, rugs, quilts and even wedding dresses. In every situation in her life, she “made do.”
Hendrika was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church in Sully and taught Sunday school for over 30 years.
