Marjorie Blom Obituary

Marjorie Florence Gatton Blom was born on May 9, 1937, to Kelly and Beulah (Fuller) Gatton at her family’s farm home near Rose Hill, Iowa.  She received her early education in the Lacey schools, and graduated from the Lacey High School. She then attended Drake University and graduated from the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing as a registered nurse.

Marjorie met Paul Blom through his sister, and they married at the Oskaloosa Methodist Church on September 4, 1959.  To this union two children were born: daughter, Brenda Lou and son, Bradley.

Marjorie was employed for thirty-three years at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Knoxville. She then managed the Pella Community Hospital Nursing Home for a time before returning to the VA Hospital.   In all, she devoted nearly forty years to her career in nursing.

Marjorie loved reading, mushroom hunting, cross-stitching, works of art, soap operas, and sporting events.  She also enjoyed golf and became the first female president of the Pella Golf and Country Club.

Paul and Marjorie attended several churches in the Leighton and Pella area and have been members of Third Reformed Church in Pella for the last 20 years.

Marjorie passed away on July 6, 2019, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa.

Those left to cherish Marjorie’s memory are the following: son, Bradley Blom of Pella; grandson, Cassidy Blom (Emily Carroll) of Pella; and uncle Robert Gatton of Oskaloosa.  She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Pat Blom of Knoxville and Elsie Kooser of Arvada, Colorado, and many extended family members.

Preceding her in death were her husband Paul, her daughter Brenda at 47 days, her parents and parents-in-law, and her brother Gary Gatton.
