Avis Leora Van Wyhe was born on October 12, 1934, to George and Pauline (Miller) Vander Schel, in Mitchellville, Iowa.

Avis attended school in Sully and was a 1953 graduate of Sully High School.   On June 5, 1953, Avis married her blind date, Jacob Van Wyhe.  For the first five weeks of their married life, Jake and Avis lived in California where he was stationed with the military.  They were blessed with four children: Arnold Lee, Richard Allen, Leora Sue, and Harlan Gene. They lived near Killduff and Sully before purchasing and moving to a home in Pella. Avis worked at the Coffee Cup Café in Sully and in Pella, she worked at Central College and the Overall Factory. Later a move to Tracy gave them the opportunity to retire and spend time with their hobbies.

Avis was preceded in death by her husband Jacob, her parents George and Pauline Vander Schel, and her son Arnold Van Wyhe.
