Bernard Eldon Van Zante was born on April 28, 1927, to Arie and Martha Boomsma Van Zante, in Richland Township, Jasper County, Iowa. He graduated from the eighth grade at the Highland Country School and attended high school for one year.

In January 1951 Bernard served his country in the Air Force until being discharged at the Charleston Air Force Base in South Carolina January 3, 1955. He spent one year in Greenland.

On August 19, 1951, Bernard was united in marriage with Lois Jean Eysink at her parents' home in the Sandridge Neighborhood. They were blessed with two sons, Steve and Phillip.

Bernard went to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of eighty-five.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Lois; his son, Steve; his sisters, Anna Paulena Van Wyk and Sarah Jonella Van Wyk.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his son Phillip at the age of thirteen; four siblings in their infancy; his brother Andrew in infancy; and his brothers, Delmon and Wilbur.
