Bernice Louise Hoyt Cummings Skinner, age 95, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Senior Suites of Urbandale. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the First Bapist Church of Pella, with a private family burial service at Oakwood Cemetery.
Bernice was born on October 20, 1917, in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Harry and Myrtle (Bemisdarfer) Hoyt. She was baptized on March 30, 1930 at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. She married George Cummings and moved to Pella, Iowa. The couple had two children: Sandra and Phillip.
Bernice was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, having served as an officer many times. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Pella since 1951. Bernice loved to travel, especially a trip to London. She will be greatly missed as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She is survived by her two children Sandra (Jim) Swanson of Urbandale, Iowa, and Phillip (Marilyn) Cummings, of Waukee, Iowa, five granddaughters, five great-grandchildren, a niece, and several nephews.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, George Cummings and Paul Skinner; and her sister, Mary.
Memorials may be designated to the Alzheimer's Association. Her family also wishes to thank the staff and workers for their excellent care of Bernice while she was a resident at the Senior Suites. Additional thanks goes to the staff of hospice this past month for the additional care.
