Obituary

Betty Darlene Schwien was born February 17, 1929, to Avolt and Fern (Pepples) Nystrom.  She passed away at Brio of Johnston, on July 22, 2022, surrounded by family.

Betty was united in marriage to Clarence Schwien on September 22, 1949, in Boone, Iowa.  They were blessed with four children:  Sherry, Richard, Janeen, and John.

For many years Clarence and Betty owned and operated the Travelodge Motel in Mason City, Iowa.  Many family memories were made at Clarence and Betty's time-share in Mazatlán, Mexico, where they made annual trips for several decades. Many family members still enjoy spending time there too. Clarence and Betty also spent many winters living in Arizona.  Betty had a green thumb, she grew beautiful flowers, and plants, but she especially loved roses and lilies. She was a cheerleader for the family; she cheered us all on in our endeavors, she was so encouraging and always proud of us. Betty was a very stylish lady; she loved having her nails, and hair done, and was known to order stylish clothes on QVC, until the end.

Betty is survived by her children and their families:

Sherry and David Lee, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Nancy and Aaron Ford

James and Erin Vandivier

Nova, Walker
