Obituary

Betty Jean Van Weelden was born December 2, 1928 in Pella, Iowa to Herman and Katherine Rus Notting. She attended Webster Grade School and Pella High School, graduating in 1946. She spent her younger days with her aunt and uncle, Leona and William C. Stursma and their family, as both of her parents worked.

Betty married Henry William Van Weelden at the Protestant Reformed Church parsonage on January 22, 1948. She made confession of faith and was baptized at the Protestant Reformed Church in 1949. Henry and Betty later joined the First Christian Reformed Church and then became charter members of Calvary Christian Reformed Church.

Betty worked at Fowler Telephone Company after graduating from high school. After her marriage she went to work with Henry at Pella Block and Tile Company, (later changed to Van Weelden Construction) until Henry's death in 1980. During those years she helped raise her two grandchildren, Anthony John and Gayley Ann Ver Meer.

Henry and Betty spent the 1970's wintering in Florida where they both enjoyed fishing. Betty enjoyed buying and selling real estate in her spare time. At the time of Henry's death they owned three properties, which she later sold. She was a member of Pella Garden Club, Pella Chamber of Commerce, and Pella Historical Society. She retired from Van Weelden Construction in 1990 and sold the business to her son, Randol Van Weelden.

After her retirement Betty became a member of Heartland Reformed Church. She served on the building committee and was church secretary for several years. Betty traveled extensively, enjoyed her grandchildren, horses, crafts, and sewing.

Betty is survived by her son, Randol, and her daughter, Sandra; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
