Derek was born July 11, 1976, in Newton, Iowa, the first son of Darcy Moore-Kane and Garry Moore. In 1995 he graduated from Newton High School in Newton, Iowa. He was an outstanding offensive lineman for the Newton Cardinals. During his senior year in Newton, Derek was selected to First Team All-State for football. After High School Derek attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Morningside College in Sioux City where he continued to play football. After earning his undergraduate degree from Morningside, Derek attended St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minnesota as a Graduate Assistant for the football team. Derek earned his Master's degree from St. Cloud State.

Derek had been coaching collegiate and high school football for 14 years, and schools include: Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Central Community College, Ames High School, St. Cloud State University, Lincoln University, Upper Iowa University, University of Northern Iowa, Western Illinois University and Missouri Southern State University. Derek was very passionate for teaching men not just about football but about how to be a better student and man off the football field.

In 2007 Elijah Dayton was born to Derek Moore and Katie Moore-Schuelke. Derek enjoyed making the most of every second he and Elijah spent together. They enjoyed fishing, fireworks, cooking "Dad's famous burgers", golfing, and watching football. The only thing Derek loved more than being a football coach was being a father to his son Elijah.

Derek is preceded in death by his grandparents Fred Wiklund and Jean and Edward Moore; and his Aunt Cynthia Berka. He is survived by his son, Elijah Moore of Fairbank, Iowa; his mother, Darcy (Curtis) Kane of Otley, Iowa; his father, Garry Moore of LaQuinta, California; his brother, Ian (April) Moore of Pella, Iowa; his grandmother L.
