IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doyle “Joe”
Van Essen
May 7, 1924 – February 8, 2015
Doyle "Joe" Van Essen was born on the family farm near Prairie City, Iowa, on May 7, 1924, to Aart and Hazel Marie (Nolin) Van Essen. He graduated from the Monroe High School and started working the farm where he lived all of his life. On March 21, 1948, Doyle was united in marriage with Beverly Wilson at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. To this union, two children were born: Timothy and Jeanie Kathleen. Doyle enjoyed life on the farm, and he was a handy man who could fix almost anything. He could often be found helping his neighbors and friends. Doyle never knew a stranger and cherished spending time chatting with anyone he could find! He also loved animals of all kinds, but especially his many dogs. Doyle enjoyed operating his HAM radio and spending time flying. Doyle passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015, at the Comfort House of Pella at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beverly; his son, Tim Van Essen of Polk City; son-in-law, David Whittlesey, of Newton; grandchildren Jason (Heather) Van Essen, Alissa (Dave) Nietfeldt, Tony Bishop, Ed Whittlesey, Holly Whittlesey, Heather Whittlesey; and 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
