Elmer John "Nig" DeWinter, son of Nicholas and Wilhelmina (Klyn) DeWinter, was born on June 1, 1916 in Pella, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday evening, July 15, 2008, at the Pella Regional Health Center-Long Term Care at the age of ninety-two.

As a child Elmer attended school in the Pella area, graduating from Pella High School in 1935. He then attended Central College for one year. He worked at the Rolscreen Company, now known as Pella Corporation, and Klyn Hatchery prior to entering the military service. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army from 1942-1945 with the 730th Signal AW Company stationed in Iceland and India. Upon his return to the states, he was employed with the United States Postal Service for the next thirty-four years - twenty years as a city carrier and fourteen years as a rural carrier.

On July 28, 1948, Elmer was united in marriage with Carrie Mae Van Wyck at the Newburgh Reformed Church in Newburgh, New York. To this union two sons were born: Allan Craig and David Lynn.

Elmer was a member of the Pella Second Reformed Church and Marion County Rural Carriers Association, serving as secretary/treasurer from 1970-1980. He also worked with the Cub Scouts and managed Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams while his sons were young. He was an active member of the American Legion as long has his health permitted.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Carrie; son Allan and his wife Debbie DeWinter of Colorado and their three children Rebecca, Jennifer, and Bryan De Winter; a son David DeWinter of Georgia; one sister, Ota Margaret Champagne of, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Andrew, Willard, Arthur, and Charles DeWinter; and his sisters: Anna Mae Roorda and Viola Butler.
