Gary Lee Van Wyk was born August 31, 1939, the fourth child of Henry G. and Clara H. (Ver Steegt) Van Wyk, near Lynnville, Iowa.
Gary made profession of faith at First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa. He attended Four Country School, Rider Junction, Iron Clad & Chester. In 1962, he enlisted in the National Guard.
On December 14, 1965, he was united in marriage to Alberdina Van Zee at the Christian Reformed Church in Sully. To this union one son was born, Scott Edwin.
Gary farmed and worked several jobs: De Jong Hardware, Sully Coop, Jasper County ASC office and Nick’s Farm Service. He also served as a Lynn Grove Township Trustee and was on the board of the Sully Rural Fire Department. He was a member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church where he served as cadet counselor and two terms as a deacon. When Gary quit farming in 1994, he started working for Clements & Associates. Gary especially enjoyed attending his grandkids’ activities.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Alberdina, their son Scott (Jennifer) Van Wyk, grandchildren: Wade and Anya; sister Margaret Ann Coop; sisters-in-law Vi Van Wyk, Jo Vos,and Lenora Van Norden; brothers-in-law: Clarence (Judy) Van Zee, Lawrence (Sandy) Van Zee; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Clara Van Wyk, parents-in-law Kryn and Walterina Van Zee, brothers Gilbert (Marlene) Van Wyk and Orville Van Wyk, sister Mildred Bogaards, brother-in-law Newton Coop, and his siblings-in-law Gertrude (Abe) De Kock, Murray Vos, and Roger Van Norden.
Memorials may be given to Sully Christian School.
