Geraldine Ault
Phillips
December 28, 1919 – June 4, 2016
Geraldine Ault Phillips, a native of Ohio, passed away comfortably at age 96 in Pella, Iowa, while living with her son David (Betty). Preceding her in death was her husband of 65 years, Clyde C. Phillips II, a son, Timothy C. Phillips, who died in infancy, and her older brothers, Chuck, Dick, and Bill.
Gerry grew up near Akron, Ohio on her parent's farm.
Her parents Charles and Vera Ault and their children moved from Akron to a farm in 1922 in nearby Doylestown, Ohio, after Charles worked short stints during the WW I period at Firestone and BF Goodrich in Akron. Times were very hard. Gerry walked about one mile to and from school every weekday. On the farm she guided the horse-driven wagon while the boys loaded it with hay.
Gerry and her brother Bill were very close. Bill graduated from Duke University with a law degree, was immediately drafted into the Army as a lieutenant, and sent to Europe. He was killed in 1945 in Germany and was awarded the Silver Star for bravery in Normandy.
Gerry went through high school in Doylestown, Ohio, a town of about 2,000 residents. She graduated second in her class excelling in drama and public speaking and received several awards in both fields. She was also a cheerleader
Gerry married Clyde C. Phillips, II on December 13, 1941, after a two month courtship. They celebrated 65 years of marriage just before Clyde's death on March 13, 2007, at 93.
During Clyde's career as a chemical engineer with BF Goodrich, the family moved between Akron, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky twice. They spent the fall of 1957 in Europe after Clyde was assigned to start a chemical plant in Wales.
Gerry enjoyed being healthy. She was very attentive to her and the family's diet and she exercised routinely. She and Clyde square danced for over 40 years. They were regulars of the Swingin' Y and Harvey Bees Square Dancing Clubs. Gerry played a very active role at her churches Trinity Chapel Assembly of God and , Highland Evangelical in Louisville; she also attended church in Oskaloosa (near Pella), Iowa. She committed her life to Jesus Christ at a young age. She loved to sew and made clothes and quilts for her children and grandchildren.
Gerry worked at BF Goodrich before having children and after the kids were grown worked at several occupations ending with employment with her son, Bill.
Her survivors will always cherish her memory. They include son Clyde III of Louisville, son Dr. William Phillips of Cape Cod (Karen) of Louisville, son David Phillips (Betty) of Pella, Iowa, and daughter Becky Hamlin (Charlie d.) of Lexington, Kentucky. A fourth son, Timothy, died at one month of age in 1958.
