Gysbert Janssen was born on March 3, 1925, to Gerrit and Jantje Beekhuizen Janssen in Renkum Gelderland Netherlands. He received his early education in the Netherlands. He was also a member of the Dutch Army from 1944-1947. In 1951 Gysbert moved to the United States.

On February 12 1954, Gysbert was united in marriage with Grace G. Vander Kraats in Pella, Iowa. To this union six children were born: Dennis, Carol, Gary, Jerry, Don, and Janet.

Gysbert was a farmhand for 21 years and a factory worker at Vermeer Manufacturing for 18 years, retiring November 1, 1990. After retirement he worked at Pella Nursery. Gysbert had a passion for gardening and working outdoors. He also enjoyed coffee at McDonalds's, Arby's, HyVee with his wife, Grace.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of nearly sixty years, Grace; his six children and their spouses: Dennis and Karen Janssen, Carol and Dave Harvey, Gary and Sheila Janssen, Jerry and Donna Janssen, Don and Liz Janssen, and Janet and Wes Swank; sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two siblings: Gerrit Janssen and Alie Van Kooi both of the Netherlands.

His parents preceded him in death.
