Jeanette Lee Van Wyk was born April 8, 1950, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to John and Leota (Van Etten) Toom. Jeanette passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital on July 29, 2016, of complications from an infected gall bladder.

Jeanette's family moved to Pella in 1954. Her eventual husband, Gary Van Wyk, moved in across the street from her when she was nine years old. She attended Pella Community School. Gary and Jeanette began dating in high school and were united in marriage on December 17, 1966, at First Baptist Church in Pella. They rented a handful of houses in the Pella area until July 1971, when Gary and Jeanette purchased their home on East Third Street, where she lived for the next 45 years. In this home, they raised their two children, Wendy and Jason.

After years of being a mother and homemaker, Jeanette worked for Central College Food Service, local greenhouses and antique stores. Jeanette was a gracious hostess. She always made time for everyone. She enjoyed going to car shows with friends, tending her flowers, and camping. Most of all, Jeanette loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In the summer of 2012, Jeanette began suffering from Primary Myelofibrosis, a bone marrow disorder. In February of 2015, she underwent a stem cell transplant, thanks to a generous, anonymous donor.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 49 years, children, grandchildren; her siblings: Paul and Diane Toom of Springfield, Missouri; and Wanda Russe of Houston, Texas; mother-in-law Carolyn Van Wyk of Pella; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wes and Connie Van Wyk of Pella, Ruth and Ron Hulleman of Pella, Arlan and Jane Van Wyk of Pella, and Judy and Steve Kleidosty of Pella.

Jeanette was proceeded in death by her parents, and father-in-law Armour Van Wyk.
