Joan Arlene Versendaal was born, the youngest of six children, near Sully, Iowa on April 27, 1936 to Andrew and Johanna (Geenen) Versendaal. She attended Sully Christian Grade School, graduating from Sully High School in 1954.
On October 18, 1954, she married Louis H. Terlouw in Sully, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Cleo, Lila, Pamela, Carlene, and Rhonda.
Joan worked as Louis’ bookkeeper for his auto business and in food service at Monroe Elementary School, and also a dietary aide at Clearview Manor and Hilltop Manor. She later worked for many clients as an at-home health aide.
She accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour in October 1961. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Monroe, Iowa, where she was baptized as an adult. Later, she was a faithful member of Berean Baptist Church in Pella, Iowa.
Some of Joan’s favorite past-times were sewing, cooking, baking and canning.
Joan passed away at age 90, on July 25, 2026 at Dallas Center, Iowa.

She is also survived by her brother, Adrian Versendaal of Grinnell, Iowa, and sister-in-law Theda Fopma of Grinnell, Iowa. In addition, she is survived by many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Louis Terlouw, infant son Cleo, her parents, Louis’s parents, brother Arie and sisters Mathilda Van Sant, Marie Lender and Dorothy Latcham, and seven of Louis’s siblings: Arletta Baarda, Jennie Marie Hurst, Henry Charles Terlouw, Martha Willemsen, Isabelle Vander Weerdt, Marion Terlouw, and Lloyd Terlouw.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Berean Baptist Church - Mission Fund, 314 Main Street, Pella, IA 50219.
