Obituary

Joyce Rena Van Wyk was born Nov. 26, 1926, in Hawarden, Iowa, as the fifth child to Ben and Lura (Brown) Kooi. Joyce grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa with her two brothers and four sisters. The family moved to Pella in March 1944. Joyce worked and lived with her sister on the second floor at the "Home for the Aged" (Fair Haven West) for five weeks. Joyce then started working at the Overall factory. Joyce married Delmer Van Wyk on June 18, 1947. To this union six children were born. They farmed in the Galesburg, Killduff and Leighton areas. In 1958 the family moved to Knoxville and lived there more than thirteen years. In 1972 they moved to Pella, and Joyce returned to the Overall factory where she worked until it closed. Joyce often said she had three lives, before she married, while she was married, and after Delmer died in 1990. In 1996 Joyce moved into Pella Manor until 2021 when she moved into the Cottages. Joyce enjoyed her family, friends, reading, puzzles, games and the many years she worked at Fair Haven. Music had a special place in Joyce's life. She was a church organist and choir member for many years. Joyce was a faithful member of Trinity church in Pella. Joyce will be remembered by everyone for her easy smile and kindness.

Joyce is survived by five children, sixteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, sister Florence Blom, two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Van Wyk and Arvena Van Wyk.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Janice Van Wyk, parents, parents-in-law, Will and Nellie Van Wyk, sisters: Esther and Roy Vander Plas, Margeret and Loyd Dickerson, and Ruth Kooi; brothers: Lewis and Tillie Kooi, Earl and Henrietta (Toots) Kooi; in-laws: Bob Blom, Armour Van Wyk, Wallace and Joyce Van Wyk, Dennis Van Wyk, Elvin and Patricia Van Wyk, Norman and Marilyn (Vos) Van Wyk, Nella Ruth Van Wyk, Anna Mae and Herman Van Mersbergen, Chuck and Gerdena Stursma; and great grandchildren, Henry Stout, Kamden Stout, Kohen Stout, and Zach Van Donselaar.
