Obituary

Larry Edward Cogley, son of Dennis and Marjorie (Smith) Cogley, was born in Montour, Iowa, on May 11, 1935. He was baptized at the age of 14 at St. Mary's Church in Grinnell, Iowa, on June 14, 1949. He attended school in Grinnell until his parents' death when he was 14. He then lived with his sister, Dorothy, in California.

In 1953 at the age of 17, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as an Airman 3rd Class until 1959. While in the service he attended trade school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for Fixed Wire Communications, or in simpler terms a "cable man". He was stationed in Germany for nine months during this time.

Larry and Shirley (Klyn) were united in marriage on May 4, 1957. At this time he was stationed at Edward's Air Force Base and later Vandenberg's where they made their home. To this union four children were born: Steven, David, Terry, and Scott.

Larry's work in communications continued after his discharge when he went to work for Fowler Telephone (now Windstream) in Pella, with only a brief stint at Maytag. After hours Larry built homes, managed the theater, and did just about anything to keep busy.

He started CSC Communications in 1970 refurbishing telephone switching equipment, only later to buy back that same equipment for salvage when new communication technology entered the marketplace. His business took him across the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Larry's export business with overseas partners offered him and Shirley an opportunity to take a trip around the world in 1984. He retired from the communications business in 1993. However, farming and other interests kept him busy.

Larry's building talents were put to use while volunteering at Forest Lake Camp, on mission trips, and various projects for friends and family. He was loved by family and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Don, Paul, Jerry, and Dorothy; and sons, Steven and Scott.

He leaves behind his wife, Shirley; his brother, Phil; children, David Cogley of Pella and Terry Morales of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law, Connie Cogley of Pella; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
