It is with our deepest sympathy to announce the passing of Leland James Braun, 83, of Prairie City, Iowa. Leland left this world and entered the almighty kingdom of heaven on 9/25/26 at 12:53 pm, quietly in his sleep surrounded by friends and family, at his home in Prairie City.

Over the years, he touched many lives with his wisdom, humor and an unwavering spirit and commitment to his Catholic faith.

Leland is survived by his wife Dody Braun, his sons Jason and Kristen Braun and Jeff and Marya Braun and his 5 grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Ryan Braun, Andrew Braun, Cherokee and Alexa Braun, Dakota Braun and Nelah Braun. A great grandchild is expected in May. Leland is also survived by his siblings: Blaine Braun of Elk Run Heights, Texas, Arlene Schroeder of Lavernia, Texas and Janelle Braun of Caldwell, Texas.

He grew up with strong Catholic roots often helping the priest with Sunday mass as an alter server in his local church. He was raised on the family farm where chores and hard work were daily expectations. During summer months he enjoyed the space and freedom to explore, spending many good times with his family and friends.

Leland graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1961. He attended Junior College in Mason City Iowa for 4 years. He joined the Army in 1964 and served until 1966 active duty, becoming a reservist from 1968-1970.

Early in life he learned to fly small aircraft and co-owned a Cessna Cardinal, something he shared in common with a beautiful young girl he met in 1975, who would become the love of his life. Dody and Leland were married May 15th, 1976, in the Immaculate Conception Church in Colfax, Iowa. On May 15th, 2026, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together with family in attendance.

Leland held a talent for and enjoyed music of all kinds. Many nights he could be found at one of his Barber Shop Quartet members’ homes practicing for or performing in shows in front of live audiences. He played the organ and would often invite friends to sing along while he played.

Leland operated motels and hotels for most of his adult life. In 1985, he and Dody with children in tow, took the leap and purchased the Cardinal Inn Motel and Restaurant, in Prairie City, Iowa, making it their family business for over 40 years. Working side by side with each other, he would often cook as she would clean rooms or wait on tables. Their two children took part in the project and would often help serve bus tables or clean dishes. They prepared feasts for visitors far and wide with customers coming from all over the country to try the best prime rib around. Weary travelers would stop by at all hours of the night to rest their heads in one of the 20 rooms in the motel. Additional long-term rental properties were soon purchased in the community where tenants could stay.

Leland raised his children Jeff and Jason Braun, with a strong foundation in the Catholic Church. He spent Wednesday nights teaching CCD classes, and Sundays he would serve as lector in Sunday morning mass. He had served with the local Knights of Columbus chapter for several years.

Sundays was his favorite day as that was the day he could spend time with his family boating on Lake Red Rock or visiting other area restaurants after church.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents Orie and Leona Braun and his brother Garen Braun.

Memorials may be given to Unity Point Hospice or to the family to support barber shop quartets.
