Obituary

Leona Van Donselaar Ver Meer was born on August 26, 1910, to Peter and Jennie Verros Van Donselaar near Pella, Iowa. She passed on to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at Jefferson Place-Long Term Care at the age of ninety-nine.

Leona lived in the Pella area all her life and received her early education at the Valley Country School through the eighth grade then attended Pella High School where she completed the tenth grade.

On March 12, 1936, she was united in marriage with Gysbert Ver Meer at the home of her parents. Leona and Gysbert were blessed with four children: Junella (June) Martena, William Jr., Phyllis Ann, and Gloria Lou.

Leona began taking piano lessons at the age of four from Mrs. Cole, an organist at the Baptist Church. Mrs. Cole was later Leona's organ teacher. Leona began playing for church services at the First Christian Reformed Church and continued in that capacity for seventy-seven years. She used her gift of music playing for weddings, funerals, her husband's quartet, and many accompaniments.

Leona enjoyed being a homemaker where she spent countless hours sewing blankets, quilts, and toys for her children and grandchildren.

Leona made profession of faith at the First Christian Reformed Church at a young age. She served as president of her church societies and several other organizations. She also volunteered her time in the community. Leona was currently a member of the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her four children: June (John) Rosier of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bill (Marilyn) Ver Meer of Pella, Iowa, Phyllis (Ben) De Vries of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Gloria (Keith) De Bruin of Oskaloosa, Iowa; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Leona was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Gysbert; three brothers in infancy: brother Albert P. Van Donselaar; two sisters: Anthonia De Cook and Grace Van Sant; brothers-in-law Anthonie De Cook and William Van Sant; sister-in-law Cornelia (Gosselink) Van Donselaar; and her nephew Ralph De Cook.

Leona will always be remembered as a Godly example through her care and love for her family, living her life to bring glory to God.
