Leona Mae Van Sant was born on August 1, 1931, to John H. and Agnes Steenhoek Plate near Leighton, Iowa. She received her early education at a country school near her home.

On October 18, 1951, Leona was united in marriage with Geurt John Van Sant. They were blessed with four children: Gary Eugene, Roger Lee, Duane Allen, and Barbara Kay.

Leona was a devoted mother and homemaker. After raising her children to the teen years, she began employment with the Lynnville-Sully School District driving a school bus which she did for thirty-one years. She enjoyed following her children in their sporting and music events. She was actively involved in Dollars for Scholars at the Lynnville-Sully High School. She also enjoyed baking cakes for weddings and birthdays.

Leona passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Griffin Nursing Home in Knoxville, Iowa, at the age of eighty-two. She is survived by her husband, Geurt, of Pella; her four children: Gary Van Sant of St. Charles, Missouri, Roger and Lisa Van Sant of Sully, Duane and Ann Van Sant of Des Moines, and Barbara Van Sant of Sully; two grandchildren: Anthony James and his wife, Keri, and Kathryn Sue; and one great-grandchild, Archer William.
