November 30, 1909 – March 2, 2008
Lloyd Mathes, son of Frederick W. and Wilhelmina Augusta (Hoening) Mathes, was born November 30, 1909 in Marion County, Iowa. He passed away at the Pella Comfort House on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the age of ninety-eight years.
On February 19, 1935 Lloyd was united in marriage with Bessie Mae Bogaards at the home of her parents. Lloyd and Bessie spent many years farming before their retirement in 1980. At that time they moved to Pella where they resided for twenty-eight years.
Lloyd loved to tinker with anything not working. He enjoyed bicycling, fishing, driving, the Mathes Bash, the farm, fellowship with the "coffee group", the Senior Site, listening to gospel music, watching old taps, and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pella where he served on the building committee and as a deacon.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his two sons and their wives: Chet and Judy Mathes of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Gary and Shirley Mathes of Pella, Iowa; one daughter and her husband: Sharon and Ron Plate of North Little Rock, Arkansas; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Ivan Mathes; and his sisters-in-law: Bertha (Clifford) Mathes and Jennie (Peter) Bogaards.
Preceding him in death are: his wife, Bessie on March 6, 1987; two children: his son, Verne on August 11, 1998 and daughter, Gertie Koopmans February 25, 1985; seven brothers: Herbert, Clarence, Raymond, Arnold, Layton, Clifford, and Roland; and one sister, Marie Klein
