Obituary

Logan Vander Leest was born in Monroe, Iowa, to Dick and Janet (Den Hartog) Vander Leest September 10, 1928. Logan graduated from Pella High School in 1946 and Central College in 1951 with a B.A. in Economics. He also participated in choir at Central.

Logan was united in marriage with Marcie Valster on December 21, 1951. Married for 64 years they were blessed with three children: Wayne, Lola and Carol.

Logan proudly served in the Army from August 1951 through April 1953, during the Korean War. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in the 25th Signal Corps. His duty stations were in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and Korea. He was able to take many photos of his time in Korea that he could share with family and friends. After his Army tour of service ended, Logan began a 40-year career with Job Services of Iowa in Newton.

Logan was a member of Third Reformed Church where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He loved antique cars, touring the Midwest with his Model T, and participating in countless Tulip Time, Veterans Day and Fourth of July parades in Pella. He had fond memories of dating Marcie in a model T.   He also drove his Korean War vintage Willys Jeep and DAF Daffodil (Dutch manufactured car) in numerous parades.  Logan's love for his Willys Jeep was started as he drove this vehicle back and forth to the front lines delivering intelligence messages in Korea while serving in the Signal Corps. Logan loved to read, especially the love letters his sweet Marcie sent to him while he was deployed in Korea. For 60 years Logan served at VFW post 5242 in Pella, Iowa, earning recognition from Legion National for his many years of faithful service. Logan served as Commander of this Post from 1998 through 2004.

Those left to cherish his memories are: KC and Gloria Valster, Wayne and Kris Vander Leest, Pella, Iowa and their children Landon, Olivia and Demrie; Lola and Dave Kenworthy, Des Moines, Iowa and their children Nicole and Ryan Boyington, Norwalk, Iowa, Adam Kenworthy, New York City, New York; and Carol and James Tanis, Tyrone, Georgia and their children Alysa and BJ Pilling, Cumming, Georgia and Jacob and Lauren Tanis, Alpharetta, Georgia, and nieces: Melanie Valster Wilborn, Linda Easton Phelps, and nephews Stuart (Laurie) Valster, Mike (Carrie) Valster and Tim (Katelin) Valster. Logan was further blessed with five great grandchildren: Brooks and Elle Boyington, Hudson and Piper Pilling and Lucas Tanis.

Logan is preceded in death by his wife Marcie, parents Dick and Janet Vander Leest, his parents-in-law Cornelius (Case) and Henrietta Valster, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Shirley Valster, Larry and Vivian Easton, and niece Jackie Valster Martin.
