Obituary

Louise was born March 29, 1929, to Harold and Ruth (Hardy) Palmer in Ottumwa, Iowa. She attended a one room school house in rural eastern Lucas County and graduated from Russell High School in 1947. Following graduation Louise attended business school in Ottumwa, Iowa. Her first job was at Prudential Insurance.

June 17, 1951, Louise married Jerry R. Byers. They lived in Chariton, Corning, and Oskaloosa before moving to Pella in 1964. Jerry and Louise owned and operated the Gambles Store for six years. Louise then delivered packages for the Iowa Parcel service, helped manage the Dutch Buffet with Jerry, and was a demonstrator for several home dAC.cor companies. She also coordinated private housing at Tulip Time for 23 years. Good Sam Campers Club was another area of service in which Louise was active. She was a shuttle driver for the Torch Run of the Special Olympics for many years. Louise also volunteered at the Iowa State Fair for over 15 years. She was never too busy to care for her family and help friends.

As a child, Louise accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. She followed the Lord, in believer's baptism and called First Baptist Church of Russell her home church. She and Jerry instilled a love of God and dedication to the Lord. The family was at church whenever the doors were open, attending Bethel Baptist in Oskaloosa, where Louise served the Lord as a Sunday School and VBS teacher. In Pella, she humbly served at Berean Baptist as church clerk, teen youth group sponsor and Sunday School Secretary for many years, and other areas as needed.

Louise raised her five children to be honest, hard-working, caring people. She was a wonderful role model who never complained. Her hobbies revolved around her family and included sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, reading, and RV camping with Dad across the country, even taking all the grandchildren to Disney World over a period of several years.

Louise went to meet her Lord and Savior November 15, 2015.

She is survived by four daughters and one son: Joleen (Lonnie) Gerber of Pella, Joyce Mattox of Pella, Janice (Jeff) Rost of Waverly, Martha (Rick) Kindley of Knoxville, and Bruce (Pamela) Byers of Noble, Oklahoma, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her parents Harold and Ruth Palmer, and her brother Donald Palmer.
