Obituary

Maxine Ruth (Hiemstra) (Schuring) (Vander Linden) Verros was the firstborn child and only daughter of John Cornelius Hiemstra and Lillian Gosselink Hiemstra, arriving on December 16, 1932. Maxine was born into a family with a very strong Dutch heritage and faithful reverence to God, which remained important influences throughout her life. Maxine's birth was at the family's homestead, Valley View Farm. Subsequently, she became big sister to: Donald John, Robert Lee and John Dwayne. Her childhood days were filled with playing with her three younger siblings, cousins and neighbors. Young Maxine's daily chores included helping care for her brothers, feeding chickens and gathering eggs. She played piano, clarinet and guitar.

Maxine was baptized at Pella's First Reformed Church in 1933, where years later, she also made profession of faith in 1949; served as president of Girl's League and was a member of Ladies Aid, Keenagers and Golden Hour Sunday School class. She attended Valley Country School from 1st through 4th grades; Silver Grove School from 4th through 8th grades; and Pella High School from 9th through 12th grades. She graduated high school in 1951. Directly after graduation, Maxine began working as a secretary in the Credit Department at Rolscreen for a couple years. It was her daily job to deliver documents to be signed, to the offices of Pete Kuyper, Stu Kuyper and Paul Farver. She took a brief break from the workforce before again returning to Rolscreen (Pella Corp) to work in the factory stockroom from 1967 – 1990.

One Sunday evening following church services, Maxine caught the eye of Nick Junior Schuring. There was a two-year courtship; a marriage proposal and then a wedding on March 7, 1952. To this union four sons were born: Jerry Dean, Carl Lee, Michael Dwayne and Ronald Craig. The family lived on many farms – including a home that didn't have running water, indoor plumbing or a drain. The home was heated by a wood stove. Maxine was a hard-working farm wife who tended to a huge garden and fed livestock before the family's attention turned to showing horses. The Schurings became extremely successful and well known in the horse community, investing much time to their endeavors. Maxine sewed matching Western shirts for her sons.

Maxine and Junior were married 27 years until his sudden death from a heart attack at age 49 on September 24, 1979. Maxine continued living on the Otley farm in the home that she and Junior built together.

Two years had passed when Maxine struck up a conversation with Delwin Vander Linden at a local car wash. The couple dated a while and were married on May 8, 1981. Maxine warmly welcomed three stepchildren into her life: Deletha, Leon, and Cindy. Delwin and Maxine loved attending estate sales in search of various collectibles and were able to enjoy many travel destinations together. They were married 13 years before Delwin's passing on June 12, 1994.

Maxine met Gerald Verros, a bachelor and retired farmer, on a church bus trip. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1996, making Gerald a first-time newlywed at the age of 69. Gerald read poetry to Maxine and wrote her poems. They volunteered together at Pella's Information Windmill and presented informative programs to multiple senior citizen groups. They served as leaders of Shepherd's Flock at First Church. Gerald and Maxine were married for over 15 years until his passing on July 12, 2012.

Maxine's leisure moments were happily occupied with hobbies that included photography, researching family and Pella histories, and scrapbooking. Up until July 6, 2025, Maxine was able to remain in her own home on Main Street, especially appreciating spending time on her beloved front porch. That dream was made possible largely due to the unwavering, devoted and loving care and steadfast commitment from her son Mike, with his daily dedication to his mother as her sole caregiver for nearly twelve years. In Maxine's final days on this earth, both of her surviving sons, Mike and Ron, along with other family members, reverently walked Maxine to her heavenly home.

Maxine's memory will live on through a legacy of four sons, their spouses and families, and three stepchildren, and their families. Maxine adored her children, 20 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.
