Obituary

Michael Van Dyke, 44, of Pella, Iowa, passed away on June 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and quiet strength. Born on May 12, 1981, in Pella, Iowa, to Verlan and Carol (Rook) Van Dyke, Michael lived a life marked by deep thoughtfulness, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Michael began his professional journey as a graphic designer and later advanced into roles as a training manager and continuous improvement analyst with Gannett, a major newspaper publisher best known locally for the Des Moines Register and USA Today. His passion for improving work culture and efficiency took him across the country and even to India, where he left a positive impact on colleagues and teams far beyond his hometown.

Michael's heart for service and connection was evident from a young age. He was actively involved in TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) during his teen years — not just as a participant, but as a mentor and counselor to others. His decision to skip his own college graduation in order to go on a mission trip to Honduras spoke volumes about his selflessness and priorities in life.

Those who knew Michael appreciated his love for the simple joys — evenings spent playing board games with friends and family, hiking and camping in National Parks, and cheering on his favorite teams: the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Twins. Ironically, though a proud Iowa Hawkeye fan, Michael earned his degree from Iowa State University.

Michael was deeply creative. What began as woodworking gradually evolved into painting, photography, and eventually light painting — each medium allowing him to express his artistic spirit. He was also a collector, curating records, sports cards, and action figures with the same intentionality he brought to every aspect of life.

One of Michael's most treasured qualities was his ability to give meaningful gifts. He had a unique way of making people feel seen and appreciated — not just with words, but with thoughtfully chosen gestures that revealed how well he knew and cared for those around him.

Michael faced many challenges with courage and determination. One lesson from his father — the simple advice to always "T-R-Y" — stayed with him throughout his life. Though cancer ultimately took his life, it never defeated his spirit. He remained a light to others, investing in people, listening deeply, and walking alongside them through their darkest moments.

Michael is survived by his parents, Verlan and Carol Van Dyke; his brothers and their families: Kevin and Ashley Van Dyke (Kaden, Ellie, Blaine, and Brooks), and Bradley and Markee Van Dyke (Case); and his grandmother, Marcella Rook.  His legacy lives on in the lives he touched — and in the name his nephew proudly carries: Case Michael Van Dyke.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gertrude and Gert Van Dyke, and Herman Rook.

Michael's life was a testament to quiet generosity, meaningful connection, and deep resilience. He will be missed more than words can say and remembered with love always.
