IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phyllis
Hugen
December 25, 1940 – April 25, 2023
Phyllis Arlene Hugen was born December 25, 1940, to Simon A. and Jeanette (Verschuure) Van Dusseldorp, in Runnells, Iowa.
Phyllis grew up in the Monroe area, and moved to Pella in 1952. She was a 1959 graduate of Pella Christian High School where she was an All-State Basketball Guard in 1959.
Phyllis met Howard Hugen at Pella Christian High School. She asked him to the Sadie Hawkins scavenger hunt. They were married on November 30, 1961, in the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. They were blessed with two children: Amy and Ryan.
Phyllis worked for the Pella Farmers Co-op, then Pella National Bank in 1961. When they started their family, she became a stay-at-home mom, and later returned to the bank until 1996, when they moved to Florida. She worked for Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Florida until they moved back to Pella in 2004, and their most recent move was to Pleasant Hill in 2007.
Phyllis enjoyed playing the organ for hundreds of funerals and weddings. She had a well-worn Bible, and one of her favorite verses was Micah 6:8:
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Howard, their family:
Amy and Bryan Maach of Vail, Arizona
Ceirra Jane
Dennis Ryan and Kayla
Eriel Faith
Ryan and Kelly Hugen of Pella, Iowa
Tyler Gene
Kaden Jay
Nathan Ryan
She is also survived by her brother: Gerald and Janny Van Dusseldorp of Pella; and Howard's siblings: Bob and Betty Hugen of Knoxville, Jim and Joyce Hugen of Oskaloosa, Nancy DuPree of Lake Worth, Florida, and Roger and Linda Hugen of Pella.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents Simon and Jeanette Van Dusseldorp, her parents-in-law John and Wilma Hugen, her sister Joyce De Armond, her siblings-in-law Bonnie Hugen and Dan Dupree, and her nephews Scott Dupree and Ashley Hugen.
