Shirley La Voe Van Hal the middle daughter of Ernest and Anna (Jelsma) Van Der Kamp was born July 13, 1932.

Shirley graduated from eighth grade from Ironclad Country School on the Jasper County Line. She also graduated from Sully High School in 1950. She then went to work in the office of the Sully Cooperative Exchange Elevator. After marriage she continued working there until they started farming.

On November 25, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Gerrit Van Hal at her parents’ home near Sully after his return from serving in the Army. They became parents of four children: Sharon, Gregory, Erwin and Anita. In March of 1957, they moved to a farm northwest of Pella and farmed there until December of 1965, when they moved to a farm southwest of Leighton. They continued to farm there until February of 1997, when they retired and moved to Pella.

Shirley was a homemaker and helped in different areas of farming. After her children were out of the house she sorted seed corn in the fall. For eight years she worked part-time at the Pella Community Hospital Nutrition Department.

She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, reading, word find, listening to gospel music, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Shirley was a faithful member of the Second Christian Reformed Church, now known as Cornerstone Church, where she attended Women’s Bible Studies. She also taught Sunday School at Pella and Leighton Christian Reformed Churches.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Gerrit, parents Ernest and Anna Van Der Kamp, parents-in-law Jacob and Dena Van Hal; great granddaughter Grace Nunnikhoven, sisters Vivian Van Der Kamp and Lois and Marvin Schmelzle; Gerrit’s sisters Jennie and Helene Van Hal; brothers Geurt, Cornelius, Raymond and Jerry Van Hal; and siblings-in-law

Donald and Sophia Bennink, James and Evelyn Vanden Oever; and Glenn Summers.
