Obituary

Simon Junior Steenhoek was born on November 28, 1934, to Simon J. and Wilhelmina Mol Steenhoek in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Simon (Junior) was raised in the Flint Ridge area northeast of Pella. Because of his father's ill health, Junior's parents moved to town in the spring of 1947. At that time he went to Lincoln and Webster Schools and also found several miscellaneous jobs mowing grass, planting tulips, raking leaves, working at Buerkens Wagon Factory, etc. During his high school years he worked evenings at Pella Rolscreen.

On March 20, 1956, Junior was united in marriage with Helen Corinne Ver Ploeg at the First Reformed Church in Pella. They were blessed with three children: Kendall, Daniel, and Carla.

In April of 1957 he joined the National Guard. He wanted to farm, so they moved to Corinne's family's century farm south of Pella in February of 1959 where they lived until moving to town in 1997. Even after retirement he kept a keen interest in the farm operation and loved to spend time there.

Junior was a faithful member of the Third Reformed Church in Pella where he served on the consistory for many years and taught Sunday School. He led Bible study classes for inmates at the Newton Correctional Facility for six years. He also served on the Pella Ambulance Board and Board of Supervisors. Junior enjoyed sporting events, especially when his grandchildren were involved. He also liked fishing, traveling, and spending time on his dozer.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Corinne; his three children and their spouses; thirteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Jaybe Steenhoek and his wife, Ada; sister-in-law, Erma Steenhoek; sisters-in-law: Arlene (Loren) Roorda, Gladys Ver Ploeg, Lorna De Geus, Janice (Dave) Klein; brother-in-law Henry (Sharon) Ver Ploeg; step-brother Henry and Hester Smith; and step-sister Ann Kooiman.

Preceding him in death: his parents; his parents-in-law, Gradus and Fannetta Ver Ploeg; his brother, Gilford Steenhoek; step-brother and step sister-in-law, Ed and Arlene Smith; step-brother Neal Kooiman; and brother-in-law, Willis De Geus.

We will all miss his smile and his sense of humor.
