IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stephen
Veldhuis
November 9, 1928 – April 4, 2013
Rev. Stephen Sipko Veldhuis, the son of Berend Jan and Siepkje (Veenstra) Veldhuis, was born November 9, 1928, in Almelo, Overyssel, Netherlands. He immigrated with his parents, sister, and brother to Alton, Iowa, in 1953, leaving behind his (then) fiancAC.e, Ann Slot.
In January of 1955, he went back to Holland to get married hoping to make it easier and faster for Ann to come to America. Finally in October of 1955, she got her papers as well. They made their home in Alton, Iowa, where Steve became an electrician.
On June 8, 1957, their daughter Sylvia Elizabeth was born in Orange City, Iowa. In 1959, the family moved to Holland, Michigan, where Steve attended Hope College and Western Theological Seminary. In 1963, he graduated and accepted a call from the Ireton Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa. He also served churches in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, Knoxville, Iowa, Ackley, Iowa, and Ellsworth, Minnesota. In 1994, he retired and he and Ann moved to Pella, Iowa, where Steve has been working part-time as "Assistant Pastor of Calling" for the First Christian Reformed Church. He also has been preaching regularly.
Steve went to his heavenly home Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of eighty-four.
Steve leaves behind his wife, Ann, his daughter Sylvia, and grandsons, Jesse and Caleb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Minnie Scholten; brother, Henry Veldhuis, and son-in-law, Robert Uitermarkt.
