Wilma Spoelstra was born to Gerrit and Marie (Valster) Van Zee on May 21, 1928. Wilma grew up on a farm north of Leighton just above the Crookham bottom. Her father was blind and died when she was young. She often spoke of going through the Depression with her family.

Wilma was joined in marriage to Arie Spoelstra on February 23, 1950, at Wilma's family home north of Leighton Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Terry, Marlys, Royce, and Crissie.

Arie and Wilma were members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa Iowa for many years. They later joined First Christian Reformed Church of Oskaloosa, and moved their membership to Faith Christian Reformed Church upon their move to Pella. When they married, Arie and Wilma began their married life on a rented farm east of Lacey, Iowa. In 1960 they purchased a farm east of Lacey on the Glendale road where they lived until 1986. After they retired from farming in 1986, they moved to the north edge of Oskaloosa where Wilma owned a second-hand shop called the Sell Barn. Wilma loved the time she had the shop and all of the people who stopped by for socializing.

Arie and Wilma built a new home east of Pella in 2004 where they resided together until Arie passed away. Wilma wanted very much to stay in her home and God granted her that desire.

Wilma passed away at her home on May 13, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband Arie and by an infant son, Terry at nine months of age; her parents Gerrit and Marie Van Zee; and her parents-in-law Jacob and Emma Spoelstra. Wilma was the last of her siblings, she was preceded by Freddy Van Zee, Rena Van Donselaar, Bill Van Zee, Cornelia Vos, Eddie Van Zee, and Marion Van Zee.
