Betty Plate Obituary

Betty was born to AW and Thelma (Mitchell) Garrett on June 10, 1929, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  Betty was the sixth child out of eleven children born to her parents. Betty attended Grant School in Oskaloosa for her elementary years and graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1947. At the age of 16, Betty worked at various locations in Oskaloosa. In 1949 Betty married Glenn De Kock of Pella. Betty then moved to Pella and became a housewife and mother to their three children: Ken, Don and Becky. Betty and Glenn later divorced; Betty then married Robert L. Plate. To this union a son Bobby was born. Betty worked at several locations until she became a housekeeper for Central College. Betty spent over 30 years taking care of and cleaning up after “her students” while working for Central.

Betty is survived by her children: Ken and Claire DeCook of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Don and Elaine De Kock of Pella, Becky and Paul Kaefring of Iowa City, and Bobby and Laura Plate of Plano, Texas; her grandchildren: Jacque Sabin and fiancé Mark Reed, Ken DeCook, Renee and Scott Davis, Shelly and Chad Spaur, Heather and Brian Kirchner, Brittany and Anthony Westbrook; great grandchildren: Ashley Liston, Lindsay Jeugensen, Addie DeCook, Drake DeCook, Blake Davis, Carter Davis, Kyrsten Tremmel, Kiera Tremmel, Darian Tremmel, Gavin Spaur, Lainey Kirchner, Ava Westbrook, Beckham Westbrook and Aspen Westbrook, great-great grandchildren: Charlotte Liston, Cate Liston, Emma Juergenson, Braelynn Tremmel and another great-great grandchild to be born in September. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Danny Brown, three sisters-in-law: Nadene Garrett, Nancy Garrett and Mary Lou Vande Lune and a brother and sister-in-law Larry and Pat Plate, along with many nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, her parents-in-law John and Agnes Plate, her siblings: Arely Garret who died in infancy, Dorothy and Dale Hazelett, Arlene and Bill Salway Bill and Miladean Garrett, Bob and Juanita Garrett, Marge and Fred Black Jr., Marylou and Carrol Beyer and Keith Garrett, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Leona Mae (Geurt) Van Sant, brother-in-law Marvin Vande Lune and a great grandson Cole Spaur.
