Ilene Beyer

Ilene Louise Beyer was born on June 14, 1950, to Arie and Evelyn (Mathes) Beyer in the Leighton, Iowa area.  She grew up on the farm in the Monroe area and later she and her family moved to a farm just outside of Otley.  She graduated from Pella Community High School in 1968.  Then she attended La James Cosmetology School and became a hairdresser in Oskaloosa.  Later she worked in the factory of the Pella Rolscreen company.  Following her time there, she served as a nanny for several area families. She liked working at Van Den Berg’s and de Pelikan on Saturdays. She was employed by Walmart until her retirement in 2016.

Ilene loved to travel and was proud to say she had been on six continents.  One of her favorite trips was an African safari where she was able to see her favorite animal, the zebra.  Ilene also studied genealogy and created elaborate scrapbooks with great details of her family.

When Ilene graduated, she purchased a brand-new green Mercury Cougar.  It was her one and only car.  For the past 30 years her bicycle was her mode of transportation.  She rode it 365 days of the year in all kinds of weather.  She even put studded snow tires on it!

Ilene enjoyed doing counted cross-stitch samplers.  She gave them as gifts for graduations, weddings, and the arrival of new babies.  Those who received them appreciated the time and love that went into the gift.

Those left to cherish her memory are her siblings and their families:  Glen and Mary Lynne Beyer, Otley, sister-in-law Kathy Beyer of Ankeny, Harvey and Teresa Beyer, Otley, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arie and Evelyn Beyer and her brother Kevin Beyer.
