Kenneth Bevan Van Maanen was born July 2, 1929, to Charles and Elizabeth (Dykstra) Van Maanen, in Leighton, Iowa.

On December 27, 1950, he was united in marriage to Betty Rempe, in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton. To this union, they were blessed with three sons: Larry Bruce, Jeffrey C. and Keith D.

Ken was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church where he taught Sunday School, served on the Consistory and was a member of the Brotherhood.
