Laurel Wayne Vander Pol was born December 3, 1932, to Christopher and Tena (Roorda) Vander Pol, at his parents’ home in rural Monroe.
Laurel attended country school and graduated from high school in Monroe in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953, attained the rank of Corporal, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
On August 25, 1956, he was united in marriage to Nancy Rankin, at the Pleasantville Methodist Church. To this union they were blessed with three children: Steve, Rick and Kristy. Laurel loved working for Vermeer Manufacturing and the Vermeer family meant a lot to him. He retired from Vermeer in September 2000, after working there for 21 years. Seven-point pitch was his game! During COVID-19, he enjoyed car rides to keep up with the town, and see the progress at Vermeer. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, Red Rock Threshers, and the First Church of Pella, and a volunteer at the Vermeer Windmill. Later in life, his passions were volunteering at PET, and participating in tractor rides. He was also a farmer and he could fix anything. Laurel was a great man of integrity, who never knew a stranger, and frequently “paid it forward.”
