Laurie June Lukens, 58, of Pella, Iowa died May 26, 2020 at Mercy Hospital Des Moines, Iowa. She was born February 7, 1962, to Dale and Laurel (Michaels) Lukens, in Burlington, Iowa.
Laurie grew up on the family farm near Gladstone, Illinois, attended the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, Iowa, through high school and earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University with an emphasis in vision. She later taught for the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, the Idaho State School for the Blind, and in Seattle Public Schools for twelve years where she retired.
Laurie moved to Pella in 2019, where she enjoyed spending time with family and her new church family at Hope Reformed Presbyterian Church. Laurie loved her cat, Ebony, being outdoors in nature, gardening, flowers, travelling and her time in the Northwest. She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed trying new things.
Those left to cherish her memory are her brother Alan (Lisa) Lukens of Pella, and their children: Nicole, Amy, Laura (Alex), Andrew, and David; and her sister Nancy (Michael) McLain of Plainfield, Illinois, and their children: Matthew and Gregory; and her great niece Addison and great nephew Titus.
Laurie was preceded in death by her parents Dale and Laurel Lukens.
The Memorial service for Laurie will be held Saturday, May 30, at 10:00 am at Liberty Evangelical Free Church at 684 198th Avenue in Pella, Iowa.
Memorial donations will be forwarded to Hope Reformed Presbyterian Church of Pella.
