Ada Marie Steenhoek was born on August 1, 1925, the second of two children born to Dingeman and Katherine (Van Waardhuizen) De Haan. She passed away on December 31, 2017, at the Pella Regional Health Center.
Ada was born on her grandfather’s farm west of Pella. She attended Webster School in Pella. When in second grade, she and her brother were transferred to Silver Grove country school where she graduated. She was a 1943 graduate of Pella Community High School. After attending Central College, she taught country school for four years at Eureka School near Harvey, Pleasant Grove and Flint Ridge where her husband had attended as a child. While attending college in 1943, she met the love of her life, Jaybe Steenhoek, son of Simon and Winnie (Mol) Steenhoek, and was married on March 2, 1946. They shared the next 71 years together and were blessed with three daughters: Dixie Kay, Bonnie Jo and Jayni Sue. They lived near Pella their whole lives. Ada attended First Reformed Church as a child and young adult, she and Jaybe joined Third Reformed Church shortly after they were married and Ada was baptized there.
After their three children were all in school, Ada spend twenty-four years working in the dietary office at Pella Community Hospital. When she retired from there, she began working for Heritage Lace, cutting lace for them for nineteen years.
Her hands were always busy doing handiwork for her family and friends. She loved knitting, counted cross stitch, and quilting at church resulting in many afghans, scarfs, snowmen, blankets, and stitched pictures for her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who were the joy of her life. She made baby blankets for missions most of which went to Honduras with the mission team.
She is survived by her husband Jaybe, their three daughters, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
